ADD Cleaning

So many times when I’m cleaning, I find that I bounce from thing to thing and might or might not finish any of my tasks. For example, yesterday I wanted to vacuum, but here is how it actually went:

First I had to pick up the stuff that was on the floor and ended up taking stuff back to my daughter’s room. I walked back into the living room to vacuum and noticed my boots sitting in the kitchen so I took those to the closet. On my way back I noticed some kid prints on the wall and got the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser out and started cleaning spots on the walls. When I went to put the Magic Eraser back under the sink, I noticed that the kitchen drain needed to be cleaned. At that point, I decided to go back and check on my son, who was playing with his LEGOs in his room. I passed the dining room table on the way there and realized the dishes were still sitting on the table from lunch. Yes! They were still there. Don’t judge me! While I was in the kitchen (again), I noticed that the microwave was blinking “End”. I couldn’t remember what was in the microwave, so of course I had to look. Oh! It was my coffee that I had already reheated 3 times 2 hours earlier. I reheated the coffee again, although at that point it was probably a bitter mess anyway. While I was going in that direction I decided to check on my daughter playing ABCMouse on the computer. After checking on her, I walked past the laundry room right as the washer stopped. I pulled the clothes out of the washer. I noticed that the toilet wasyellow”, so I flushed it. (The washer and dryer are in a half-bath.) I walked back through the kitchen where I noticed a bowl of popcorn. I stopped to take a popcorn break. I went back into the living room to finish picking things up and take blankets back to my son’s room. While in my son’s room I noticed clothes on the floor and threw them into the hamper. I checked on him again to see how the LEGOs were going. I walked back to the living room and realized that I still hadn’t completely cleaned off the dining room table. I cleaned the plates off and threw them in the sink. Finally I walked back into the living room to vacuum. I picked up a Polly Pocket shoe. Good Grief! Could those things BE any smaller? While vacuuming in the dining room, I realized hubby would be home soon and I should probably brush my teeth sometime today. Again, don’t judge! I walked down the hallway and noticed that my son’s light was on, so I went and turned it off. By this point he was in on the computer with my daughter. I made it to the bathroom and started brushing my teeth and noticed that there were toys in the tub still from my daughter’s bath. I picked up the toys with the toothbrush still in my mouth. I finished brushing my teeth and realized I should throw a load of towels in the washer. At this point I had to help the kids find the tracker ball for the mouse. Daughter had taken it out of the mouse so that son could not go to LEGO.com.  I finished putting towels in the washer . The computer did something weird so I had to help the kids fix the problem. I went to vacuum my daughter’s room and really did suck up a Polly Pocket something tiny. I finished her room and saw a washcloth that I missed. I went to throw it in the washer. Then I vacuumed the couches. And called it a day for cleaning. Except the dishes in the sink. I still had to do those. And I saw the microwave blinking “End”. D’oh! My coffee.

My husband told me a month ago when I was complaining about not being able to get anything done that I should just focus on one job until it’s finished. Yeah right! If I could do that, I would! But, my mind goes elsewhere. The ironic thing is that I’m always telling my kids to focus. I think I need someone standing over me telling ME to focus! But, I really do think I get more done this way. I can’t be the only one that “cleans” this way! Do you guys find yourself doing this? I think it might be time to make one of those handy household binders everyone’s been talking about lately.

This in no way is meant to take away from the fact that people really do suffer from ADD every day.
