Whole Lotta Shaking Going On! | Re-using McD's Milk containers

I came up with a great idea for re-using McDonald's little milk jugs the other day!  We re-use them for homemade chocolate milk.  I thought it would be a fun way for the kids to "make" their own chocolate milk.
I add
the cocoa powder and sugar to the bottom.  Then, I pour the milk in, making sure to leave enough "shaking" room.  Then, I let the kids shake it until their heart's content.  If they need help shaking, I help 'em out!

I love this idea, because I can control how much sugar goes in.  I use 1 1/2 teaspoons of cocoa powder and 2 teaspoons of white sugar.  That's only 8 grams of sugar as opposed to Nestle Quik, which has 30 grams of sugar per serving, or more than 7 teaspoons!!!  If you use Hershey's Syrup, it's not quite as bad.  It has 20 grams of sugar.  But, my 8 grams is still better!  So, my kids can still enjoy chocolate milk, but get less sugar. And the cocoa powder?  It has anti-oxidants.  Score!

If you're worried about re-using the plastic, it sounds like you don't have to be.  According to an article on About.com called Reusing Plastic Bottles Can Pose Serious Health Hazards--"Safe Reusable Bottles Do Exist.  Safer choices include bottles crafted from safer HDPE (plastic #2)"  And, several other websites agree that reusing #2 plastics is considered safe.  Really, I would prefer that my kids completely get away from plastics.  But, re-using the little milk jugs is convenient and the kids like shaking the containers to make their chocolate milk.  Plus, they are perfect portion control!
