Say it ain't So!! Cucumbers on the Dirty Dozen List!
Apparently, when I was on vacation, the EWG came out with this year's Dirty Dozen list. If you are unfamiliar with the list, it is the top 12 items to avoid buying conventionally. These are the items that you really need to buy organic if you can. The EWG knows that it is expensive to buy ALL organics. So, they created the list so that you know which produce you can buy that doesn't have to be organic. They also have a "Clean 15" list. You can print out the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen list at their website and carry it with you in your purse.
This year, they also have a "Plus" category for 2 items that have been found to have a certain class of pesticide on them that you should avoid. And unfortunately, one of those items is green beans. Green beans are probably one of the most eaten American vegetables!
Most of the Dirty Dozen List looks about the same as last year, with the exception of the addition of cucumbers.
Apples are still the number one offender. I always try to find organic apples when possible. It gets harder at this time of year, especially since we like Galas. And of course, Bell Peppers, Strawberries and Grapes are still on there. Here is the Dirty Dozen "Plus" in order.
Do you buy any of your stuff organic?
I was having a hard time finding some of the stuff on the list in stores. I was finally able to find strawberries and Kale. I'm usually able to find celery, peppers and the lettuces.
