We are starting to get very close to having our new kitchen! It sure seems like this entire addition has been a long time coming. We began it in August of 2011. My hubby has been doing most of the work himself. So, we've been saving a ton of money, but since he works full-time, it's taking quite a while. As you may know, we have our Master Suite almost done--he still needs to put the tile on the front of the Jacuzzi tub and needs to put the baseboards down in the bathroom. And we have his office and my craft room done. Once we finish the kitchen, we can begin the remodel of the original part of the house.
But, in the kitchen right now there is still a "small" amount of work that needs to be done. It has taken my hubby about two weeks to decide on a stain color for the cabinet doors. We love the color of these maple doors, but once he began to stain them, the wood was taking the color differently in different spots. Hubby thought that the doors looked more "rustic" and he wants contemporary. So, he tried several different colors and finishes. He tried to get help at a couple different stores. A guy from Sherwin Williams was finally able to come up with a formula that we think we're going to like. My hubby has been staining furiously for three to four days now! This is what our cabinet door staining assembly line looks like right now. There are cabinet doors covering every possible horizontal surface!
We still have to decide if we're going to put either a cherry or red oak stain on top of this stain. And then we'll have to put the clear finish on.
Once the cabinets are done, he'll put the floor in.
We're going with a Congoleum Dura-Ceramic. I think the tile that we want is actually being discontinued, so we need to get on the ordering process. It actually looks just like the bathroom tile, but it's some kind of limestone composite. It makes the tile more livable. It's much warmer and softer under foot.

Once the floor is in, my hubby will make the countertops. We have finally decided that we're just going to do a laminate for now. And we actually picked the same exact color we had in the last house. So, the only actual difference between this kitchen and our last remodeled kitchen will be the floor tile. We are going to put ourselves on a five year plan for granite. But for now, the laminate will be easier for him to make and install and it will be a couple thousand dollars cheaper. Right now, we just need to be under budget and done quickly!
Once the cabinet doors, floors and counters are done, that will just leave the job of choosing the sink and the range. I haven't had a "normal" range in almost four years now. Right now, our oven is a wall oven that is pretty small and waist height. And the cooktop is small and old. The burners are so close together that it's hard to have two pots next to each other.
So for my next range, I would like a 5-burner cooktop that has plenty of room so that I can use a couple big pots at once and not have a problem. And I would love to have the long narrow griddle burner in the middle. For the oven, I'd like a big, huge window. That was one of my requirements on my last one. I wanted to be able to look in and see everything.
I looked at a couple ranges online. It's nice because I can narrow my search by price--we definitely would like to stay in the $600 range. I truthfully would like to stay in the $500 range, but that's not looking good at this point! Gas ranges must be more expensive than electric ranges because I swear we only paid between $400-$500 for our last one! We need a 30" range, because that's all the room my hubby left. And I'd like it to be 5.0 cu. ft. inside the oven.
What kind of range do you have? Do you have a separate oven and cooktop? Or is yours all in one? Gas? Electric?

You are so so so so lucky that hubby knows how to do the remodeling.
ReplyDeleteWe need a new range, ours came w/the house and is 36" w/the grill in the middle (gas). I hate that grill, lol. It's old, you have to push the buttons w/a sharp tip to start the oven (even the oven repair guy couldn't fix them on the two trips he's been here fixing it in the past).
I just want a flat-top, easy to clean electric range, but w/gas that's not going to happen. And the size isn't easy to find a replacement for (not stocked in stores so never a good deal to be found on one).
Your tile sounds awesome! Can't wait to see more pics.
