The holidays are here once again. Bring on the long, family lunches and all those sweet snacks, cookies and treats. However, have you thought about what the holidays could do to your teeth? All this feasting can wreak havoc on your teeth. While your taste buds will be buzzing, your teeth and gums may feel like they are under attack. Your dental health may be the last on your list of priorities this holiday season, however, you should make sure that your dental health and hygiene remains a priority this holiday season.  Sugar, snacking and a change to your routine doesn’t mean you should take a break from maintaining healthy teeth and gums. So, make sure you follow these tips to keep your smile fresh, fabulous and sparkling well into 2018 and beyond.

Watch your sugar consumption

All that sugar, sodas and sweet treats can spell disaster for your holiday dental routine. Choosing low sugar alternatives for your family and friends doesn’t necessarily mean you have to bypass your favorite treats. In fact, your loved ones may not even realize that they are eating low-sugar versions of their seasonal favorites. Nuts, chocolate covered fruit and cookies baked using pumpkin or almonds are all great alternatives. So, get cooking!

Be sure to brush

Are you brushing your teeth for long enough? Should you use a mouthwash? Is an electric toothbrush better for your teeth? These are all factors to consider when reviewing your holiday dental care. Make sure that you brush your teeth and gums at least twice a day, and be sure to change your brush every three to four months. Be sure not to brush too hard as this could cause your gums to bleed. Make sure you wash your mouth out after brushing too, to get rid of any bits of food that are left over. It’s important to brush, as this prevents plaque from building up and damaging your teeth’s delicate enamel.

Make a dental appointment

If you feel that your teeth are very sensitive, or you are experiencing pain, then this is a sure sign you need to schedule a dental appointment. Your dentist will know the state of your overall dental health much better than you do. Be sure to stick to any appointment that you make during the holiday season. Dentists such as Forest Park Dental can help you to get your oral hygiene back on track. So be sure to make your regular appointments.

Carry a dental kit with you

You may be on the go, or attending lots of holiday parties, but you can still take good care of your teeth. Make sure you have a dental kit on hand. You are sure to have a few minutes to sneak into the bathroom and do some flossing. Make sure that your kit contains sugar-free chewing gum too, this is handy to chew after meal times, while keeping your breath fresh also.

It’s easier than you might think to have happy, healthy, holiday teeth. Make sure that you cut down on sugary snacks and treats, for both you and your entire family. Then, you will want to ensure that you are brushing your teeth correctly and schedule a dental appointment. By following these tips, you will have a smile that both dazzles and shines.
