How to Enjoy a Summer Staycation

Everyone needs a great vacation every now and then; it calms the mind and refreshes the body, allowing us to go back to our everyday lives feeling invigorated and renewed. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to pay for a five-star vacation on some tropical beach, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a fantastic vacation at home. In fact, these ‘staycations’ are getting more and more popular, and here are the reasons why.

Explore Your Own Town

When you live somewhere, it’s easy to neglect it, and it’s easy to ignore it. When you’re on staycation, however, you can take the time to really explore it and find out what it has to offer. Visit all those little stores and boutique coffee shops that look so intriguing but that you normally just drive past on your way to somewhere else. Take a walk to the local park and find out just what different kinds of wildlife live there. Pretend you’re a tourist in town and look at the place with fresh eyes. What is there to do and see? There are probably more attractions than you even realize!

Have A Romantic Picnic

We’ve all seen the movies where the romantic lead surprises their lover with a picnic complete with checkered blanket and wicker basket. Now it’s time for you to do the same. Spend some time making some cute and tasty finger food and pack it all away neatly in your basket, along with some champagne or wine to make things really special. Then just enjoy your food, drink, and one another’s company. If you’re a family instead of a couple you can still have a great picnic, it’ll just be a little less romantic! Spend time together and get to know one another again – with everyone’s busy lives it’s easy to fall out of touch even with the people we know best.

Get A Hot Tub

Just staying at home and enjoying the yard in the sunshine can be a great way to make the most of your summer staycation. Let the kids play, and you can relax with a good book or finally download and listen to your favorite artist’s new album. Or maybe you can all play together – water fights are great fun, especially when it’s hot. Something else that’s great fun is a hot tub, and if you’re going to make good use of it, it can be a great addition to your outside space. Before you buy, it’s best to check out online hot tub reviews so you know you’re getting the best one for your money.

Go Device Free

Not everyone can manage this idea, but if you can it will really enhance your staycation. Unplug. Go device free. Put your tablets and your smartphones away somewhere and don’t look at them all the time you’re on vacation from work. Look at the world using your eyes rather than a screen. If you really can’t stay completely away from your devices then try to only use them for a short amount of time, perhaps during set times of the day. Once you get into the habit of it you will realize how much better you’re enjoying yourself without having to check your phone every few minutes. If you really like the idea of unplugging you might like to leave the TV off for the entirety of your staycation too.

Try Geocaching

Geocaching is the kind of hobby that can get addictive, but that’s not a bad thing since it keeps your brain active and it’s physically demanding too. It’s perfect for the whole family, and is like a treasure hunt using GPS enabled devices (either special units or your smartphone). You can download an app or look online and follow the directions and hints to find some ‘buried treasure’. Sign the log that you find and head off for the next one. You’ll rack up some great finds in no time.

Pamper Yourself

If you’ve ever wanted to have a spa day, your staycation is the ideal time to try it. You can turn your bathroom in a luxurious space to relax in. You just need bath oils or bubble bath, face masks, eye pillows, candles, and perhaps a relaxing soundtrack, too. Then make sure you can be left alone for a little while, and soak your troubles away. You’ll feel incredible when you’re done, and for a fraction of the price of a real spa.

Try Different Food

You’ll have a lot more time to make some incredible dinners when you’re on staycation because you won’t be rushing to and from work and afterschool activities. Use that time wisely and try some foods you’ve never tried before. Each night try the cuisine from a different country. You can make the food from scratch using online video tutorials or perhaps some cookbooks that you’ve borrowed from the library. Alternatively, if you’d rather use your staycation to really relax, you can get an authentic takeout, or go to a restaurant. Do whatever works for you because this is your time to do what you want.

Take A Class

Now that you’ve got some time for yourself, why not take a class? It could be a one or two day event, or you might like to book up for something a little longer. You know how much time you want to spend on your new hobby, so you can decide. Check out the local community college for ideas, or look on social media to see if anyone is advertising their own class. You might like to try painting, writing, cycling, rambling, tennis, pottery, or any number of other fun, healthy, or creative endeavors.

Go Camping… In The Backyard

Everyone loves camping, and if you can do it in the comfort of your own backyard, then it’s even better. Gather everyone around a campfire and cook some fun food, tell stories, sing songs, and generally have a brilliant time. Sleep in your tent, but take comfort in the fact that you can have a wonderful, clean shower in the morning, and you can use the house for bathroom breaks. Perfect.
