Spring Cleaning | 10 Things to Clean with Vinegar Today

There are a lot of things that get neglected in my house until Spring Cleaning time.  Truthfully, these things should get cleaned on a regular basis, but they just slip my memory.  Vinegar is the wonder-product that I'll be using to clean these 10 things today.

1. Dishwasher---
Check and empty the filter if it's not something you do on a regular basis.  The filter on my model is in the bottom of the dishwasher.

Clean it with a brush to make sure the mesh is completely clean.  Put the filter back in.  Pour vinegar into the soap dispenser.  Put a cup with vinegar on the bottom shelf of the dishwasher and run it on the short setting--my dishwasher has a one hour setting.

2. Clothes Washer--
Pour vinegar into the soap dispenser, bleach dispenser and fabric softener dispenser.  Run a quick load of lightly used towels and/or washcloths.  I actually ran vinegar through mine three times with towels.  I make my own laundry detergent and even though most people who make their own laundry detergent say it's safe for HE machines, I find that it gets stopped up in my machine sometimes.  I wanted to make sure to run vinegar through it several times to give it an extra good cleaning. After you run your load with vinegar, if you have an front loader, wipe down the inside of the rubber seal.

3. Coffee Maker--
Run your coffee maker with 1 cup of vinegar and enough water to fill up the rest of the tank.  You will have to run plain, clear water through the coffee maker a couple times after that to get rid of the vinegar smell.

4. Jetted Tub--

Please note:  Always check your manufacturer's recommendations before you put anything in your jetted tub.  Your manufacturer may have a special cleaner and might not recommend vinegar.  To clean mine with vinegar, I filled the tub up with cold water to about 2 inches above the jets.  I ran the jets for 15 minutes with plain water and then poured a quart of white vinegar in and ran the jets for 15 minutes longer.    Some people recommend emptying the tub, refilling and running the jets with plain water again.  I didn't refill my tub and run it again.  It's just too much water.

5. Shower Heads--
If you can unscrew your shower heads, unscrew them and place them in a bowl of water to cover the showerheads.  If you can't unscrew them, fill a zippered plastic bag with vinegar and rubber band the bag over the showerhead.

6. Reusable Shopping Bags--
Wash your reusable shopping bags using vinegar instead of laundry detergent.  (This was one of my vinegar loads to clean my washing machine)  Throw them in the dryer on the non-heat air dry setting for 20 minutes.  Take out and hang to finish drying.  Clean the plastic liners for the bottom by wiping them with a damp cloth or if you have a peroxide spray bottle, spray peroxide and wipe them off.

7. Microwave--
Place a microwave safe cup with 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water in the microwave.  Heat for 1 minute and let sit in the microwave for at least five minutes when it's done heating.  Hot water in the microwave can be dangerous!  Let it sit for the five minutes and be cautious when you take it out.  Wipe down the insides of the microwave with a washcloth.

8. Food & Dish Brushes--
When you run your dishwasher with the vinegar, place all of your vegetable and dish brushes in the dishwasher.  Double duty!

9. Plastic Shower liners--
Wash your plastic shower curtain liners with a load of towels.  Add vinegar to the bleach and/or fabric softener dispensers.  No need to dry.  Just take it out of the washer when it's finished and re-hang it.

10.Garbage Cans--
Just cover the bottom of your trash can with vinegar.  Add hot water to cover another 3 inches of the bottom.  Let sit for a half hour.  Pour out vinegar/water and use a clean washcloth to clean up the sides and outside of the garbage can.
