5 Helpful Tips for New Hikers

There are many ways to get outdoors and enjoy the wilderness. Hiking is one of the best ways to explore the outdoors, see animals and birds, and get some exercise. Hiking can reduce anxiety, improve one’s outlook on life, and experience new terrain you may have never seen before. This article will share some great tips that will help you on your first hike.

  1. Start small. Whenever you are beginning a new endeavor, you want to start off small. There are many reasons for this as you do not want to get burnt out before you have even started. It is particularly important to start small when you begin hiking because it can be quite a workout. Hiking is a great way to burn off stress, enjoy the outdoors, and get some exercise. It is a good idea to pick a small trail at first and then increase distance over a period of time. It is also a good idea to hike with a group of people instead of by yourself.

  1. Check the weather. Before heading out to the park, be sure to check the weather forecast and wear comfortable clothes. If there is a chance of rain be sure to pack a waterproof jacket and perhaps even a change of clothes if you have room in your backpack. It is also important to bring sunscreen and apply generously even if it happens to be a cloudy day.

  1. Wear comfortable shoes and socks. It is important that you choose the right shoes and socks for your hiking adventures. Otherwise you could end up with blisters which would ruin your hike. In addition, if you do not wear proper socks, your feet would sweat profusely if it is too hot or be freezing cold if the weather is chilly. Either of these situations could make for a bad experience.

  1. Hydrate. Drinking enough water while engaging in any physical activity is important but especially while hiking. Carry enough water for the day. Over time, as you drink your water, your pack will lighten.

  1. Tell someone where you will be. It is a good idea to pack a first aid kit in case you find that you need it. You will want to be sure that you have enough supplies to build a fire should you need to do so. Before you set out on your hike, you will want to let a family member know where you will be in case disaster strikes or you get lost on the trail. When you arrive home, you should also check in with this person so that they know you are safe. If you have not been heard from in a substantial period of time, this person should contact the authorities so that they can search for you.

Hydrate, pack light but smart, check the weather, and wear comfortable shoes for the most optimal hiking experience. Follow these simple tips and you will be on your way to being an experienced hiker in no time.
