Smarter Ways to Maximize Your Career Potential

We all want the best for ourselves, but the truth is that few of us are actually prepared to work for it. But even if you are on the go constantly, for every hour of the day, it’s still easy to miss out on maximizing your career potential.

The trick is all in the planning - sketching out your pathway to success and developing a strategy to take yourself to the top. Here are some ideas that every successful person out there understands, and uses to their advantage. Read on to find out more on the most important subject going, maximizing your career potential!

Educate yourself as much as possible

It’s feasible to make a success of yourself with no qualifications at all.
But make no mistake about it, your task will be a lot easier if you educate yourself as much as possible. Statistics show that graduates earn more money, work in higher positions of power, and enjoy a better lifestyle than the average person that doesn’t.

And we’re not just talking university here, either. If you want to excel in your industry, you need to always be learning - it’s one of the common traits shared by every successful entrepreneur and business leader in the world.

Learn how business works

If you really want to earn more money and get the promotions you crave, your industry knowledge will not be enough. You also need to learn how business works - how to cut costs, for example, or lead people and manage teams. Not only will this help you reach the top of your role, but you’ll also find you can move into other areas in the future.

For example, let’s say you are an engineer. Doing something like a Masters in engineering management will give you the skills you need to run teams and manage people, not just fix or create things. It’s not for everyone, of course, but your ability to progress will improve if you have those critical general business skills.

Work on your motivation

You can be a successful student, exceptionally talented, and the brightest spark in your field. But without a sense of drive and determination, you will never reach your full potential. Of course, not everyone is naturally self-motivated, and when you aren’t, it can be tough to inspire yourself to improve continuously.

It is possible to work on your own motivation, however. Making small goals for yourself and working to achieve them is the best way to get yourself inspired - you’ll start to enjoy all those successes, and it will drive you on to more.

Always perform

Ultimately, all your efforts will go to waste if you don’t perform in your role. According to the Pareto Principle, 80% of the work in your office is done by 20% of the people. Unless you are in that 20% and contributing a lot, no amount of natural talent will cover it up.

Be the person that your boss can always rely on, and make sure that your work speaks for itself. Good luck!

  1. Thanks for joining me on Curious as a Cathy with my Throw Back Thursday edition. These are some good tips for anyone, makes no difference in corporate life or at home. We should always give 100% to be the best at whatever we do, not so much for the boss (although that's nice) as for ourselves! :)

    1. Agreed, Cathy! We should strive to be our best. I always loved the quote that goes something like "Whatever you are, be a good one." :) Thanks for stopping by!
