8 Handy Tips to Make Online Clothes Shopping Work for You

As technology advances so does the way we live out our lives. To many people, the internet is one of the greatest creations of our time and it’s easy to see why when it’s completely transformed the way we do things. From clothes shopping to paying our bills, the internet has made the entire world more convenient and everything we could ever want is now at our fingertips.

One of the biggest industry transformations that we’ve seen is how the world of fashion was changed thanks to the internet. Because style is such a personal thing, the internet has given us many new outlets that enable us to browse international styles, subcultures and even share our favourite outfits for judging and style tips. Whether it’s accessories, dresses, or wedding attire, there are so many ways to find new fashion styles and build outfits online.

Another huge advantage is how the fashion world was changed in regards to how we shop. Thanks to the internet, we can now sit in the comfort of our own homes and purchase clothing from all over the world no matter what time of day it is. However, there are a few problems with online shopping that, if you’re not aware of, can catch you off guard! To help make things easier for you, we’ve put together a helpful list of tips that will make online shopping much easier to handle.

1. Always look at the returns policy before buying

The returns policy is going to determine if and how you can return or refund your clothes should you be unhappy with them. Make sure you understand how the policy works so that you’re not stuck with clothes that don’t fit, or came in the wrong color.

2. Browse social media and look for coupons and discounts

Whether you’re buying from a relatively unknown online dresses boutique or a well-known retailer, always look at social media for coupons and discount codes before you buy. You could save a ton of money if you’re vigilant, so make sure you sign up for the store's newsletter to get exclusive discounts straight to your email inbox.

3. Measure yourself (and do it again!) and look at measurements on the site

A tape measure is extremely cheap and once you learn how to measure yourself, you’ll never end up with clothes that don’t fit from the internet. Take a look at size charts as well and keep in mind that online clothes can sometimes be slightly off the measurements listed on the website. You might need a friend or family member to help measure you accurately, or you could even head to a local tailor and ask for your measurements to be taken.

4. Read reviews if they are available

Always read reviews of the website if possible. If there are no reviews, then it’s usually a bad sign! Reviews can sometimes be faked as well, so make sure you’re not buying into a scam that’s too good to be true. Remember that reviews can often be harsh and uncalled for, so always take these comments with a grain of salt. You can usually also find comments regarding certain brands and online stores from online fashion communities, so try and integrate yourself into these groups and ask for advice when you’re unsure.

5. Save a list of online retailers that you love

Bookmark all the retailers you love and check back on a regular basis for more deals and new collections. There might also be some online-exclusive brands that don’t have their own stores, so save these names in a handy list so that you can refer back to it when looking for new collections. You might also want to bookmark social media accounts because new collections are usually teased a few weeks before they release, so if you’re a dedicated loyalist to a brand, you’ll be able to always stay up-to-date with the latest information.

6. Beware of fakes and scammers on the internet

There are many scammers all over the internet that are trying to con you for a little extra cash. If you’re buying items from a reputable brand but at an extremely low price, then it’s likely a scam. If it’s too good to be true, then you’d best avoid the site altogether so that you don’t end up with a fake on your hands! In general, if you’re going to buy something from a reputable brand then you’ll want to buy from a reputable website. For example, don’t look on eBay if you want to buy high-end fashion.

7. Take a look at the materials that the items are being made with

Materials are important when it comes to fashion. Something that looks like a cotton shirt on the internet could actually be polyester or another material that you dislike. If they don’t list the materials used, then you’ll want to contact them about it to ensure you’re not getting a low-quality shirt. If you’re unsure of the fabrics you should be wearing, then it’s a good idea to do some research on materials before you buy anything online. Materials such as cotton and silk are generally much better than nylon and polyester, but everyone has their own preferences.

8. Understand the reality versus the expectations

Let’s admit it; the pictures on the internet of models wearing those clothes are going to be completely different from what you look like in them. There’s a good chance that the lighting on those photographs has been edited slightly to look nicer. Embrace the reality that what you get probably won’t be a 100% accurate representation of those pictures or else you’ll be disappointed when it arrives.

Purchasing clothes on the internet might be convenient, but you need to give these handy tips a glance especially if it’s your first time buying from the web. The last thing you want is to end up with clothes that don’t fit or that you’re stuck with, so don’t forget to take a second glance at everything!
