How to Look After Your Body After 40

Some people say that the age of 40 is the milestone for your body. They believe that the risk of many health problems increases after the age of 40 years old. It is for this reason that some people decide to start taking more care of their body when they reach this age. They start to do more exercise and eat healthier. There are in fact a variety of ways that you can start to take care of yourself when you hit 40.

Your Vision

After the age of 40, your vision can start to get worse, so it is a good time to start getting your eyes checked regularly if you haven’t before. As your eyes can deteriorate slowly, you might not realize at first that your eyes are getting worse. If you suddenly find that you are having problems reading small print or reading signs, then this could be the best time to get them checked. If you want to try to prevent vision issues, start to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. Another good idea is to start wearing sunglasses when it's sunny. Too much exposure to the sun can cause damage to your eyes. You need glasses that protect against UV-A and UV-B radiation.

Get Your Blood Pressure Checked

After the age of 40, you are statistically more likely to develop high blood pressure. It is even more likely if you are above your ideal weight and have a sedate lifestyle. You can get your blood pressure checked at your pharmacy or your doctor, and they will also be able to advise you on your reading. If your reading is high, they will talk to you about the options that are available to you.

Cholesterol Levels

Another level that can start to rise is your cholesterol level. Cholesterol is the bad fats that are present in your blood. If your diet is too high in fat, there is a chance that over time, your cholesterol level will rise. You can easily get your blood tested at your doctor, and if you have never had it tested before, it is good to get it done as a baseline.

Family History

As you are more at risk of certain diseases after the age of 40, it is important to think about any problems in your family history. For example, if you have a history of certain cancers in your family history, then you need to start looking out for signs and getting yourself checked. There are certain cancers, such as bowel cancer, that can be detected by using a simple test. If there is a history of it in your family, then speak to your doctor about taking the test. The same can apply to heart disease, if it is present in your family, then there are tests that you can take to see if you have any hardening of the arteries.

Increase Your Muscle Mass

After the age of 40, you start to lose around one percent of muscle mass per year. To prevent this or even reverse it, you should start to do more weight-based exercises. It doesn’t have to mean going to the gym, in fact, you can use anything heavy to exercise. Just by lifting a bag of sugar in each arm can help you to keep your muscles in good condition. As you get older, you may start to become less flexible, especially if you are not currently exercising. To help with this, you should start to do more exercise that increases your flexibility. You could try yoga or Pilates, both are good for you, and they are also a gentle way to introduce exercise back into your life. Your heart health is also important, so you should also add some cardiovascular exercise into the mix. It doesn’t have to be too extreme, just some brisk walking for 30 minutes can improve your heart health.

Watch Your Diet

Those times when you can eat as much as you want without gaining any weight are over. After 40, your metabolism slows down so the things you ate before, will now cause you to gain weight. It is the time when you may need to start watching your weight and be ready to cut down on some of those high-fat foods. As well as reducing fat and sugar, you should be increasing your fiber intake. Start choosing healthier options such as lean protein, fruit, vegetables and whole grains. All of these will help to manage your weight while giving your body the nutrients you need. You can also start to think about putting good things into your body. Vitamins and minerals are essential, so you should start to take supplements. You can also enjoy a range of health benefits from Kyani Sunrise which helps to keep your body healthy.

Quit Bad Habits

If you smoke or drink regularly, then you should be thinking about cutting these bad habits out of your life. Even though you may not have had any problems from smoking until now, the chances of getting a smoking-related illness dramatically increase the older you get. There are many products on the market that can help you quit smoking, or you can visit your doctor for some advice. Drinking in moderation may be ok for many, though there is still a lot of sugar and calories in alcohol so that it won’t do anything for your waistline. However, if you are regularly drinking to excess, then you are at risk of more serious issues with your liver and heart. If you find that it is getting difficult to reduce your drinking, then many support groups can help you.

Just because you have reached 40 years old doesn’t mean you should start to worry. All you need to do is to keep a check on your health and try to look after your body a little bit more than you have previously. Then, you should be able to enjoy your later years in good health.
