7 Steps to Having More Fun as An Adult

Being an adult comes with a lot of additional work and responsibilities you have to deal with on a daily basis. However, that’s no reason to forget all about having fun and to stop exploring ways to bust out your inner child. Doing so doesn’t mean you’re immature or incapable of being a grown-up. It means you want to be happy and healthy and enjoy your life while meeting all of your demands, so that you don't get too stressed. Be proud of yourself for wanting to make your life more exciting and granting yourself permission to let loose once in awhile. It’s important to take breaks and not view life so seriously all the time if you want to be joyful.

Mix up your Workout Routine

Getting in your daily physical activity doesn’t have to be boring or a chore. Branch out and come up with additional ways to get in your exercise and put a smile on your face. For example, buy yourself a 3 wheel bike for adults and see how much fun you have riding it around town or on the trails near your house. You’ll be getting a workout in and relaxing and enjoying nature all at the same time. Other ideas include joining a gym that offers group workout classes or challenging yourself to play sports like you did when you were a kid.

Take A Day off Work Now & Then

While it’s not good practice to play hooky frequently, it’s never a bad idea to take a mental health day now and then and give yourself a break from the chaos and stress of work. Claim a day to yourself to sleep in, watch your favorite movie, or catch up with an old friend. It’ll feel a little awkward at first, but remember you’re doing it for you and to help you become a healthier and happier person. A day off may be all you need to feel re-energized, and you’ll likely perform better at work when you return to the office. Your tasks will be waiting for you when you return, so relax and enjoy this time off doing what you love.

Go on Dates with your Spouse

As an adult, it’s easy to fall into the trap of putting your responsibilities first and forgetting about your spouse and their needs. Make your relationship more fun by dating again like you did when you first met. Put activities on the calendar and surprise one another with cute gifts and nice gestures. Dress up and go out to eat on a random night of the week and stop worrying so much about your chores. This is a great way to reconnect with the one you love and get to know each other again and fall back in love. Your marriage is important and each of you deserves this time away from your busy schedules to be with the one you love.

Play with your Kids

Instead of getting upset with your kids or telling them what to do, take a different approach and play with them. Find common ground and come together to laugh, talk, and enjoy each other’s company. It’s easy to get caught up in your adult duties and forget about how important it is to play and unwind on a regular basis. It’s okay to seek out funny videos and jokes that make you laugh and put a smile on your face. Spend more time interacting with positive people who inspire you and engaging in activities that challenge you and make you happy. Set aside time for going out with your friends and telling old stories about each other that make you laugh. Kidding around and being carefree feels good and makes you realize that there’s more to life than crossing tasks off your list. Know when to let go and laugh off a situation instead of carrying around unnecessary stress.  

Put Fun in your Schedule

If you’re bad about letting yourself have more fun, then put it in your schedule and make sure you’re doing it often. Maybe for you this entails getting a massage, reading a good book, or spending time with friends. If you don’t write it down or block out time for fun then you might get busy and forget about it. It’s okay to make relaxing and unwinding a priority and not let yourself get too bogged down by all the responsibilities on your plate. If you’re tired, then you should rest, and if you’re up for an adventure, then you should put down the cleaning supplies and go out for a hike with your dog.

Express yourself Artistically

Coloring, writing, and drawing are all great ways to express yourself artistically and have fun. Remove all judgments and right or wrong and let your pencil or paintbrush go without trying to control it. You may surprise yourself at how talented you are in these areas and notice a boost in your confidence when you’re all finished. Let these projects not only allow you to have more fun in your life, but also help you reduce stress and find peace and calm in your days. Keep in mind this an activity you can do with your kids if you’re looking for opportunities to spend more quality time together.
