Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

Take the road less traveled because routine can be boring. There almost isn’t a single person that would say they are content with every day being the same. What if nothing ever changed? Imagine falling into a state where nothing is ever new and exciting anymore. It would be a dull place to live - a place devoid of any knowledge and growth.

While change in life is inevitable, some people do what they can to avoid it. After all, sticking with what you know provides you with a security blanket. The problem is, this security blanket doesn’t let you grow. Learning to take calculated risks, and engaging in activities that you wouldn’t normally do can benefit you in different ways. Those risks and new activities help you grow as a person and teach you lessons you could have never otherwise known or experienced. More details about getting out of your comfort zone can be found below.
Taking risks

When you take a risk, you place yourself out of your comfort zone. Of course, it’s important to take risks within measure. A risk should by no means result in you losing all of your money playing the lottery or purchasing items you cannot afford. However, there are risks, within measure, that can benefit people. The ‘oops’ mentality can be better than the ‘what if.’ The ‘what if’ leaves people with regret that they should have done something differently. Living life with regret doesn’t benefit anyone, ever. If you feel that a career change is necessary, take the leap. Why not go back to school later in life if you feel it necessary? Not every risk will result in a positive outcome, but that is okay. Learn from your mistakes and don’t repeat them. No one can say what the future will bring, but that risk could be just the thing your life needed. You might as well take a chance on yourself, or you risk living your life with regret.

Example activities

There are various ways you could live life on the ‘edge.’ Two big examples are with travel and food. Travel is one of the biggest ways people can experience adventure and is an eye-opening experience for many. It’s one of the greatest activities that people can undergo. Many people like to travel, but it means more than just visiting a place and doing the tourist-related activities. Consider talking to locals to find out more about the place you are visiting. Pay attention to your surroundings, and see what the locals do for ‘fun.’ Even if it doesn’t sound appealing to you at first, it could end up being your new favorite pastime.

What type of travel do you like to do? Do you prefer rural or urban settings? This is yet another example where people could try out new experiences. If you are an outdoor lover but do not enjoy camping, there are always options to it. For instance, you can discover more with Moab, an outdoor lover’s paradise with a glamorous campsite. You can enjoy the desert with comforts of home, getting the best of both worlds and still stepping outside of your comfort zone.

While traveling, or even staying locally, another great way of stepping outside of the comfort zone is with food. Shake up your routine with something as simple as eating a new type of food you haven’t tried before. Don’t fall into a routine where you aren’t open to new experiences. After all, these new experiences can do wonders for your life. You might even be surprised at how much you like this new type of food. The reality is, you won’t know until you try.

Growing as a person

Getting out of your comfort zone and taking risks allows you to grow as a person. A comfort zone implies familiarity, but this is not always the best option. Stepping outside of this comfort can teach you valuable lessons about yourself you never knew. By always remaining comfortable, you miss out on a lot. With constant routine, there aren’t any challenges or risks that can help you get better. While going out of your comfort zone does not necessarily imply a positive outcome, there is always a lesson to be learned. You are always walking away wiser than you were at the very beginning. Remember that you can overcome any hurdles along the way. Those inspirational quotes you read are true; you are stronger than you think. Plus, getting out of your comfort zone will allow you to accept change. Life is all about change; there is no point in running away from it. Challenging yourself will broaden your mind and will allow you to succeed more than you ever did before. Without risks and new experiences, how can you possibly succeed? The alternative is that you will remain stagnant in life. The various activities mentioned earlier in the article can inspire you and cause your creative streak to flourish, all of which benefits personal growth and knowledge.

Everyone has the ability to step outside of his or her comfort zone, but they must be willing to do so. It’s easier for some than others, but everyone stands to benefit from it. As already mentioned, stepping outside of the comfort zone teaches you many valuable lessons and broadens your mind. That being said, there is a certain line you should not push yourself over. While risks and spontaneity are beneficial for your growth, do not go skydiving if you know you have heart problems or if you will faint. Stepping out of your comfort zone is meant to be exciting and exhilarating, and not induce anxiety. Stress and anxiety will stifle your creativity and negatively affect your mental health. Know your limits. Understanding this precaution, challenge yourself to do things you wouldn’t normally do and see what happens. Go to a restaurant you’ve never been to before and order something  unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. Book a spontaneous trip somewhere and talk to locals to find out what they do for fun. Remember to try out those activities you haven’t tried before. You should even switch up your career if you feel it is the right course of action. Take a chance on yourself; you never know what may come of it.
